One of my childhood dreams was to learn guitar. I’ve always admired great guitarists from Jimmi Hendrix, Santana, Chuck Berry or B.B. King to Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones or Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits. They seemed so cool to me that I’d have given everything to have the chance to learn how to play guitar, not at their level, of course, but at least good enough to allow me to join one of those local heavy metal bands that were so popular by that time. Well, I’d have been pleased with only being able to play the guitar for my friends. However, since my parents didn’t give a penny on art, it’s obvious I never got any guitar lessons nor any other artistic education such as piano lessons for beginners, until I was old enough to pay for them myself.

Can Adults Easily Learn How To Play Guitar?

I managed to learn guitar in my 30s and I can say I’m at a satisfactory level. I’m not able to compete with world’s greatest guitar players but I can entertain my friends at parties, which is good enough for me.

However, I discovered that the learning process is different in the adult life rather than during childhood. This doesn’t mean it’s necessarily harder to learn new things when you’re a grown up. It only means that you need to follow a method that’s suitable for your age.
Speaking of methods, very few of us can actually find the time and the motivation to take guitar lessons with a teacher. Even if we can find a teacher that’s available any time of day, any given day of the week, many adults will still have a hard time being taught what to do and how to do it.

This explains the success of instructional DVD packages containing step-by-step videos, detailed explanations and video demonstrations. You can learn at your own pace, while taking advantage of the same materials music school students use. Moreover, the really good courses come with additional printed materials, so you can practically study everywhere without bothering people around you.

It’s clear that one needs more than a couple of hours to learn the guitar. If you want not only to learn how to play to guitar but also to master it, a couple of weeks aren’t enough. You need serious practice to learn how to play guitar at a decent level. This is how you can strengthen those brain connections that make you unconsciously remember the step by step process of playing the guitar. It’s like learning how to drive a car: in the beginning you need to continuously tell your brain what to do, but after a number of hours of practicing you’ll have automated gestures and reactions.

This website is dedicated to a series of guitar lessons called “Learn and Master Guitar”, which is especially conceived for homeschooling or for adults who want to learn guitar by themselves, at their own pace, when they have spare time, yet get some guidance online when needed.
